NANCY ARONSON, PHD

I have been bringing practical, collaborative methods to organizations and communities facing complex issues since, well, forever...
I grew up in Queens, New York in a neighborhood where kids of all ages were always outside playing. Consequently, I learned to play well with others. I was constantly part of innovative, creative approaches as we developed new games, refined rules, and adjusted to changes in the external environment such as new barriers in the alleyways, changing weather conditions and alternate street parking. I was part of an elaborate system of feedback and talent development. You knew where you stood in a variety of street games as sides were chosen. The older kids helped the younger kids develop skills and took responsibility for grooming the next generation of outdoor athletes.
For the first 29 years of my consulting work, I was in business with my best friend, Beverly Arsht. She recently turned her formidable talents and artistry to ceramics.
I’m an aunt to my nephews and to the children of many of my friends. I take this role quite seriously. I’m present, supportive and very engaged, while understanding that I’m not the main attraction.
My brother has described our family business as education. He is a nephrologist, his wife is a virologist and they both teach at Yale Medical School. My oldest nephew is finishing a fellowship in pediatric emergency room care at CHOP, where he was consistently recognized for his teaching interests and ability. His wife is an outstanding fifth grade public school teacher. My other nephew is a composer. In addition to scores for musicals, he writes songs to accompany children’s books and has taught third graders in Brooklyn how to write operas. It’s in the genes!
I was an education major in college. I taught 6th and 7th grade prior to getting a masters and doctorate in learning theory as it is applied to groups. I see learning at the core of the work we do with organizations and communities. We are constantly creating the conditions for people to analyze and synthesize information, expand their perspectives, and uncover possibilities.
